The Gift

by Eva Blake, Devon, England, Age 14

It was her thirteenth birthday, when Laura got her diary. It was silver with grey swirls all over it, with a padlock and right from the start it seemed unusual. It was her Great Aunt Agnes who had given it to her, the one Laura always thought was a witch. Laura's mother said Laura was wrong of course, but then her mother always had doubts about Great Aunt Agnes herself. Even though there was no key and the diary was locked Laura had no problem opening it.

Inside there was a message:

Write today what shall happen tomorrow,
Or tomorrow 'surprises' might be seen today.

Laura showed this to her mum but all she could see was:
To my dear Dear Niece Laura,
Love your Great Aunt Agnes.

Laura carefully put the dairy away and carried on opening her gifts. Later on Laura went up to her room and got out the diary. Again it was locked, but she had no problem opening it, she wondered how the gift had got to her, but it was one of those things that you just don't think about. She looked inside and found the messages again:

Write today what shall happen tomorrow,
Or tomorrow 'surprises' might be seen today.

She puzzled over the meaning and turned the page. It was dated 3rd of May 1968 and it had writing on it, but today was 2nd of May 1968 and no one knows exactly what will happen tomorrow and as she thought about it she noticed that writing was appearing on another page. She read it and it was dated for today. It was written about what had happened and what ' will happen', Laura thought that the light was strange or maybe she was day dreaming, but as the day moved on Laura realised that it was all coming true, so just before she went to bed she wrote the bottom of tomorrow's 'prediction' - "I got an A* in my French test."
The next day Laura went to school, her first lesson was French and she was dreading the result of her test, but as the teacher handed it back she said
"Congratulations you got top marks"
Laura couldn't believe it. She rushed to her locker and got out her dairy and it was there written in black and white:
I got an A* in my French test

Laura was amazed she could write the future or so she thought.
A month had' passed and all the people that she hated had soon had more than their fair share of bad grades, detentions and missing books and soon they all realised something was up. They turned to Laura, their well known enemy and out of panic Laura wrote some thing she would soon regret. After a day she realised her mistake and put the diary away hidden in a box.

She had realised just how powerful it was and decided to live a normal life, before she did herself or someone else harm and she put it to the back of her mind until now...
4th of June 1998

30 years later as Laura was moving house she saw it, the diary, and the thing that she thought and hoped was only a dream soon became a reality, once again. She opened it up and read:
You have left me for too long now I shall get my own back,
Wait and see what I shall make for your 'non-future'

Laura dropped the book in surprise and then quickly picked it up to read:

5th of June 1998:
Laura has gone missing and shall never be seen alive again, when the police do find her she has drowned in a freak ice storm, she has frozen to death.
20 years later a girl receive a diary from an unknown relative, it was silver with grey swirls all over it, it had a padlock and no key and on the inside it had a strange inscription.

The cycle was to start all over again...

The End
