Review: Samsung a920

What it is: Streaming mobile video comes alive with the a920. Not sure what that is? Well, think of it as watching video clips without having to wait for any downloads. Bell Mobility tried this out with the Torino Winter Olympics by offering three-minute clips based on each hour of CBC’s TV coverage. But there’s even more than that. NHL highlights, celebrity gossip, weather, newscasts and comedy are all available to view.

What’s good about it: The fact that you don’t have to wait long periods for downloads is a big help, and it’s thanks to Bell’s EV-DO wireless broadband network. Instead of paying per video clip, Bell offers a bunch of different bundles that let you have unlimited viewing. This way, you can avoid having a huge phone bill every month. The key thing here is that the battery doesn’t drain, even if you watch a lot of clips. Plus, you have access to both the EV-DO and 1X networks, so you’ll rarely be out of signal range and the reception is great too. The camera phone isn’t bad, but nothing overly special compared to other phones.

What’s NOT good about it: There’s a music store on here where you can download mp3’s onto the phone. But the costs don’t make much sense in going through with it because you’re looking at $2 per song. Not only that, but they also charge you a $5 “mobile browsing fee” too. Worse than that, loading songs onto the phone from your PC is a pain in the ass when it really doesn’t have to be. There’s a speaker on the a920 as well, which is a couple of notches too low.

What’s the verdict: It doesn’t get much cooler than seeing some of these video clips. Watching highlights of the Olympics and the previous night’s NHL games is really great. Now if only they could’ve gotten the music part of things right.
