It
was 20 years ago that the Transformers made their debut on TV
screens all over North America and created a phenomenon that
continues to this day. With the war on the planet Cybertron
raging on between the Autobots and Decepticons, the key to victory
for both sides lies in the third race of Transformers: the Mini-Cons.
The Mini-Cons are small like their namesake, but when put together
they pack a serious punch.
Megatron, the notorious leader of the Decepticons, has amassed
a huge army of Decepticlones to go after the Mini-Cons and enslave
them, so it’s up to you as Optimus Prime, Red Alert or
Hot Shot to put an end to his plan to dominate the universe.
To do so, you’ll have to fight through the Decepticlone
hordes in places like the Amazon Rainforest, Antarctica, a Spaceship,
a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and even
a volcano.

When you find Mini-Cons scattered over the various areas, they
augment your powers by lending you support, like a force-field
or a rocket launcher, for instance. There are over 40 Mini-Cons
to track down, but once you find them, you’ll be glad
you got a hold of them.
In terms of visuals, this game has some of the best graphics
I’ve ever seen on the PS2. The landscapes are crisp and
detailed, and no matter how much action is going on, the game
won’t slow down at all.
The interesting thing about Transformers is that it’s
a straight-up shooting action game, but it’s also pretty
tough to go through. Expect to continue many times going through
this game because they make it really tough for you to gain
any ground. It’s unfortunate that there’s no multiplayer
element, and it is a little short in overall gameplay, but Transformers
is a definite winner for the PS2.
