It
may not have been wise for Activision to boast that their Spider-Man
2 video game would be even better than the first Spider-Man
movie. The expectations a comment like that bring are enormous
when you consider how good the first Spider-Man film was.
Like
the video game that came out with the first film two years
ago, Spider-Man 2 puts you in Spidey’s costume while
you swing your way through the urban jungle that is New York
City. The city itself is as accurate a portrayal of New York
as you’ll ever find. The detail put into this aspect
of the game is worth its accolades. Unfortunately, that’s
where all the good stuff ends.
Where
the original game was story-driven and challenged you to be
stealthy, Spider-Man 2 isn’t consistent in its presentation
that way. It’s nice to have the option of going after
common criminals or saving a man from falling off a building,
but the problem is that it all gets way too repetitive in
this game. After a while, you start to ignore the petty crimes
going on around you and begin focusing on the key part of
your mission just to keep things fresh.
Buying
upgrades by using Hero Points is nice because you do a lot
of good to get those Hero Points, but there aren’t any
unlockables to fight for. Behind-the-scenes footage or other
cool stuff that has to do with the Webhead would’ve
been nice, but it’s nowhere to be found here.
For
fans of Spider-Man, this game is definitely worth a rental,
because it’s a risk to buy. High expectations and the
success of the movie put a lot of pressure on Spider-Man 2,
and it really doesn’t deliver as advertised.
