When
the first Splinter Cell came out for the Xbox in 2002, it
was considered one of the best games of that year —
and with good reason. With a package that included excellent
graphics, great gameplay and an engaging storyline, it was
hard to argue with its success.
The
high-level of stealth and skill that made the original so
popular are both back in Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow,
where you reprise the role of Sam Fisher in an attempt to
stop an Indonesian terrorist group.

The improvements made here are significant for a variety of
reasons. First, the graphics are just unbelievable. The way
the game looks in terms of light sources and shadows can almost
be a distraction, especially in the opening missions in the
jungle. Second, Fisher can now execute more moves like the
“SWAT turn” and a whistling sound that can distract
enemy guards. And third, if you’re hooked up to Xbox
Live, you can now play online as a spy in third-person view
or a mercenary in first-person view.
Splinter
Cell was unique in the sense that you had to find ways not
to shoot people. That trend continues here since you’ll
be shooting more light bulbs than terrorists in Pandora Tomorrow.
Like the original, this game can also move at a slow pace
sometimes, and for those who are accustomed to fast-paced
action, that can be an overall drawback. Still, don’t
be surprised if Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow turns out
to be one of the best of 2004.
