Being
a female rap artist with street cred, while commanding respect
from your fellow peers is a hard one to live by, but Da
Brat manages easily. A pioneer is voicing what female rappers
often have to say, sometimes about themselves and mostly
never apologizing, Da Brat manages to get most of it right
with Limelite, Luv & Nightclubz, her 4th album, letting
her mouth fly off before she does.
The
pace of this album goes something like this: sex to sexy,
and funnily put at that. Even though LL&N appears slower
than most hard core rap compilations, but don’t let
that fool you into thinking you are not getting your money’s
worth of a banging package, especially with an A-list of
star collaborations. There are some lah-lah tunes thrown
in with Mariah Carey in “Gotta Thing For You”,
huskily filling in. And “In Love Wit Chu, featuring
Cherish, is a good summer romance tune. Yet, Boom is in-your-face
brashness about another’s boyfriend gives Da Brat
that edge which makes her stand taller than her counterparts.
Da
Brat, a Chicago native has worked with producers Jeramine
Dupri and L.T. Hutton, who has also worked with MC Ren and
Snoop Dogg. Altogether, make way for another album on your
shelves that made it there simply on being taken seriously,
while being brash all the way.
