Hair Repair Advice
by Malena Ogryzlo-Harbers

It’s time to take action and restore dry, lifeless hair back to its shiny, lustrous self before any real damage sets in. Here, Howard Barr, Creative Consultant for John Frieda—who has worked with Hollywood starlets Drew Barrymore, Heather Locklear, and Charlize Theron —shares his top tips for repairing and maintaining healthy hair just in time for the summer.

TIP #1

Protect your hair from heat and UV damage, and keep frizz at bay with a dose of daily serum. Try Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Hair Serum.”

TIP #2

Always have chemical processes, such as highlighting and straightening, done by a professional.

TIP #3

Keep hair trimmed regularly. Every six to eight weeks is key.

TIP #4

Use deep conditioners and masks on a regular basis.

TIP #5 Try to reduce the amount of blow drying and ironing you do to your hair. Instead, let your hair dry naturally as often as possible.
TIP #6

When vacationing in sunny climates use products that contain sunscreen and always rinse your hair after you’ve dipped in salt water. (Don’t forget to reapply the sunscreen product afterward if you are staying out in the sun.)

TIP #7

Use high quality hair brushes. A natural bristle brush is best for hair—metal brushes tend to overheat and split the hair.

TIP #8

Invest in a flat iron that is ceramic. This will decrease the amount of passes you will have to make over the same section of hair when straightening it.

Mask It!

Just as shampoos are formulated to work on different hair types, not all conditioners work in the same way. “A deep conditioner can be used daily, whereas a hair mask should only be used twice a week,” says Barr. Hair masks help to moisturize dry and damaged hair by penetrating deep into the cuticle. Depending on how dry or damaged your hair is, leave the mask on for 30 minutes or even overnight. Applying heat to the hair will also help the mask penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Wrap you hair in plastic (a plastic grocery bag works well) and use a hairdryer for 10 minutes for an at-home intensive treatment.
