TV Host Sara Cauchon Rants:
Get Informed, Get Involved!
by Sara Cauchon
Our generation has been afforded many luxuries and it’s time to
start giving back. A friend of mine sent me an e-mail with
words to live by and I think they sum things up quite
nicely…EVERYTHING MATTERS, MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
It’s important to get involved. Below are five steps you can take to
get out there and be part of the bigger picture!
#1: VOTE.
Voting is a privilege that people have died for.
Unfortunately, it seems the more privileges we
have, the more we abuse them. We forget how
lucky we are to live in a democracy, where our
voice counts. So, shout from the rooftops, and
make your concerns heard. Even if it’s voting for
your Student Council president, VOTE! One vote
can make a difference, just ask Al Gore.
#2: GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS.
I know most of us hear the word, tune out
instantly and think…BORING. But, politics rule
the world. And not just on an international
scale. Decisions made by politicians affect us
everyday. When an election comes around,
read up on the candidates and what they stand
for, and once you’ve learned all about them,
decide for yourself who you think best
represents your interests. Learn about the
structure of our government and the history
behind it. I guarantee this stuff will come up in
the future, and hey, it doesn’t hurt to be a
well-informed person.
#3: READ THE PAPER OR WATCH THE NEWS. EVERYDAY.
Believe it or not, it’s not all crap. I
know sometimes it can feel irrelevant to your
already compelling life but you won’t believe
some of the stuff that happens on a daily basis,
it’s actually pretty exciting. Plus, it helps
socially…here’s a cool trick: I read the newspaper
everyday, and remember one interesting fact,
and then I mention the fact to every person I
meet that day and they suddenly think I’m
smarter than I really am. Try it, it works.
#4: HAVE AN OPINION.
Although I think it’s important to know what’s
going on in the world, we’re all aware of the
biases in our news media. Everybody has a
bias, whether they mean to or not, and it
affects the way they present a story. Your job is
to take the facts and create your own opinion.
Don’t always believe everything you hear, watch
or read. Do your own research and make an
informed decision. Ah, the brain can be a
beautiful thing once you know how to use it.
#5: PICK A CAUSE, ANY CAUSE.
Think of one issue you feel absolutely
passionate about and do something about it. If
the destruction of the rainforests make you
weep, join Greenpeace. If your heart belongs to
our furry friends, there’s the World Wildlife Fund
or the Humane Society to volunteer with. If you
know someone who has cancer, do some
fundraising. There is bad stuff in the world and
it is our responsibility to do what we can to stop
it! As clichéd as it may sound, one person can
make a difference, just look at Nelson Mandela
or Martin Luther King Jr.
That’s the way I see it.
