Skin
is the largest organ of the human body and an excellent indicator
of general health. It's a complex layer of tissues that acts
as a barrier between ourselves and our external environment.
Although it is composed of two primary layers , the outer
epidermis and the inner dermis, it also contains arteries,
veins, nerve fibers, sweat glands and hair follicles among
other things. It prevents damage to underlying structures,
assists with fluid balance and temperature control and is
an integral part of how we perceive ourselves and others.
Our skin can visibly reflect our emotions: it flushes, pales,
perspires, glistens, glows, has goose bumps, becomes furrowed,
wrinkles, tingles, itches, provides pleasure and hurts. This
section will deal with some of the problems that can involve
this important part of our bodies.
