Active
Agent
GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid) is a naturally occurring short-chain
fatty acid metabolite of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA).
Isolated during research on GABA, GHB is found in all body
tissue, with the highest concentration in the mammalian brain.
GHB may have a role as a minor neurotransmitter. It is involved
with regulation of GABA (a neurotransmitter), dopamine (neurotransmitter),
5-hydroxytryptamine, and acetylcholine (neurotransmitter).
There is some dispute as to the legality of GHB, however distribution
of GHB is illegal in the US. GHB was initially legally distributed
by health food stores in the early 1990's as a "safe" alternative
to anabolic steroids. So much for "health food."
Effects
Excessive
GHB (1/2 to one teaspoon) can result in dizziness, confusion,
or even coma or seizures. Drowsiness and hypotonia can progress
to vomiting and depressed respiration. After many "poisonings"
by GHB the FDA banned GHB as a nutritional aid.
Addiction Potential
Physical
- none. Psychological - low.
Method of Use
Ingestion
of liquid
Pros
Lower
doses are associated with euphoria.
Cons
Higher
doses associated with the possibility of confusion, coma and
seizures.
