Agent
3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine
(MDMA, also referred to as Ecstasy or XTC) is one of a series
of "designer drugs" created by chemically modifying methamphetamine.
One of the other drugs in this class is MDA (3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine).
Effects
MDMA
is said to be a "empathogen," as it is supposed to make people
understand each other's feelings better. Serenity, feelings
of tranquility, and conviviality are typical. In typically low
dosages it provides a moderate euphoria and calmness. However
one side effect is muscular tension, which leads to couples
giving a lot of massages ....you can imagine what comes next.
Occasionally blurred vision, chills, or sweating can be seen
at higher dosages. Side effects of the root drug (amphetamine)
include high blood pressure (hypertension) which can cause bleeding
into the brain. A few acute deaths have occurred. Amphetamines
and MDA also will produce vasculitis (inflammation and narrowing
of the arteries of the brain) when used chronically.
Addiction
Potential
Physical
- Moderate. Psychological - Moderate.
Method
of Use
MDMA
is generally taken orally. A few years ago it was a popular
drug at "raves" (large, all-night parties which moved from place
to place different nights). Some people have reported snorting
it works too.
Pros
Associated
with feelings of tranquility and serenity.
Cons
Could possibly cause neurological damages years after prolonged
use. Some deaths have occured (see above), often from drinking
too much water as users try to quench intense thirst beyond
body's ability to absorb water.
