Charity Fashion Show

This June, Calgary-based designer Nina Rahal-Kharey, of House of Nonie, previewed her newest collection, JR2010, named after her late brother, Jassy Rahal, in Toronto. Nina wanted her charity fashion show to raise awareness and funds for the Red Cross and end senseless acts of violence after losing her brother to violence.
She has drawn inspiration from her experience and it shows through in her fabulous collection, consisting of exquisite dresses made from silk and wool fabrics. Nina’s collection has an apparent theme of asymmetrical designs which are very unique. They are classic and elegant, adding frills, puffy sleeves and gold lame to simple black dresses and tops.
The fashion show was hosted by Gemini-award winning Alexz Johnson who recently released her debut album, Voodoo, and its first single “Trip Around the World.” As the models walked down the runway, the audience had the opportunity to listen to some of the eclectic sounds from the album.
Not only were the clothing designs fabulous, but one of my favourite parts of the show was the jewelry, made by Shah Emily Noaman, owner of 3 Shahs. Each piece was adorned with chunky and colourful stones and beads, and was designed specifically for the dress with which it was worn.
The show was entertaining, the goody bags were packed with great stuff, the designer was inspiring and the company was fantastic—all the makings of a glamorous evening.
House of Nonie will be available at select retailers this fall including
Coco & Violet in Calgary.
