PONYO
Review By Heidi Filici

PonyoAre you familiar with The Little Mermaid (parts one, two and three)? Well picture a re-vamped anime-style version that will make you both laugh out loud and get all teary-eyed.

In this version (directed by Academy Award-winning and Japanese animation legend, Hayao Miyazaki), a magical goldfish wants nothing more than to become a human. A five-year-old boy named Sosuke (played by Frankie Jonas—as in the Jonas Brothers’ baby brother!) be-friends the little fish and decides to call her Ponyo. Sosuke promises to take good care of her on land, but eventually Ponyo’s father finds her and returns her to the sea. The stubborn little goldfish refuses to stay put and goes in search of Sosuke, in the process morphing into a little girl and causing quite a wave of destruction.

“The way the characters moved looked so real! And all the bright colours used made the animation stunning. It was incredibly entertaining,” said a grinning audience member. And you too will be grinning knowing that your listening to the voice talents of none other then, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson and Noah Cyrus (Miley’s sister) as Ponyo.

Ponyo (an absolute hit at the box-office in Japan) unveils what happens when the modern world collides with magic. It is the best fish adventure since Finding Nemo! You’ll find that the giggles, squeaks and bursts of laughter echoing in the theatre will be coming from you and your friends. If you love anime or are looking for a new adaptation to the common “chick flick” then this is a must-see for you!
