Mean Girls 2 - on DVD Feb 1st, 2011MEAN GIRLS 2
Review by Carrie Cai

You better hold onto your books and look the other way, because The Plastics are back and meaner than ever in the long-awaited sequel to 2004’s Mean Girls.

Mean Girls 2, which is more of a spin-off than a sequel, is all sorts of funny and dramatic, filled with designer duds (Prada bags everywhere!), a lot of scheming and good ol’ girl drama.

It stars Meaghan Martin (Camp Rock) as Jo Mitchell, a tough girl with a simple mindset when arriving at her new school for senior year: finish high school, avoid drama, and get into her dream university. That all changes when she befriends outcast Abby (Jennifer Stone, Wizards of Waverly Place) and becomes the target of The Plastics: Mandi Weatherly (Maiara Walsh, Vampire Diaries), Hope Plotkin (Nicole Gale Anderson, Make It or Break It) and Chastity Meyer (Claire Holt, H20: Just Add Water). Tim Meadows reprises his role as Principal Duvall, making hilarious off-hand comments about his experiences with the girls from the first movie.

This straight-to-DVD movie does well as an attempt to fill the gigantic shoes the first movie left behind. Besides the scheming and dresses to die for, let’s not forget the eye-candy—namely Tyler Adams, Jo’s love interest and shop class partner, played by Diego González Boneta (90210, Pretty Little Liars). There’s even a scene of him shirtless, pouring water over himself after a sweaty soccer practice. In. Slow. Motion.

Faze got a chance to talk with leading lady, Meaghan Martin, about the original Mean Girls, the pressure of the sequel, and of course, Diego.

FZ: Were you a fan of the first movie? Who would you say was your favourite character from that one?
MM: Yes, huuuge fan of the first movie. I can quote it backwards and forwards. I think Rachel McAdams as Regina George was pretty killer and Tina Fey—she just always makes me laugh no matter what she does.

FZ:  Was there a lot of pressure with that role knowing how successful the first movie was?
MM: Definitely…because the first movie is just so well done and so wonderful, and I can’t say that enough. But I think what I had to remember with this movie was that we’re not trying to be the first. It’s its own thing and its own idea. It’s just following along the path that the first movie laid out.

FZ:  What was it like working with Diego González Boneta?
MM: It was great! Diego and I have been friends for a couple of years. He called me right before I left for [filming in] Atlanta and was like, “Hey, you leave for Atlanta soon, right?” and I was like, “Yeah” and he was like, ‘Well, I’ll see you there!” [Laughs] So it was good. He’s a nice guy and he’s been a friend of mine for, like I said, a couple of years now.

Mean Girls 2 is available on DVD on February 1st, 2011.
